Congratulations of our NCC Teams at State!
Monday, March 28, 2011
Congratulations to our Nashville Center Programs that qualified for and competed at the State Team Championship this past weekend. This event pits four-member teams of each school together to face off against Tennessee's other top programs from the Chattanooga, Knoxville and Memphis regions.
In the Primary Section for K-3rd graders, The University School of Nashville (USN) finished 2nd place! This is a repeat of their runner-up performance last year. Coming off 17th Place finishes in the Atlanta Nationals last Spring and a 9th Place finish in the Orlando Nationals in December of 2010, The USN kids now look ahead to the K-12 Championship here at Opryland Hotel and then the K-6 Nationals in Dallas a week later. The team members of this elite squad (in board order) were Wei Dai, Tanuj Koli, Joshua Esquivel, Aden Barton and Seth Ellis.
In the Elementary Section for players in grades K-6, USN scored 2nd as well! This runner-up team improved 2 spots from 4th in 2010 to 2nd in 2011. They also look ahead to both the Nashville and Dallas Nationals where they will be fielding teams. These members were Lucas Pao, John Morphett, Puja Jagasia, London Eckhard, Elsa Wilson and Henry Rieniets. Also from the NCC, a very powerful Ensworth Team that just keeps getting stronger qualified and finished in 8th place. At 2/3, a last round victory would have moved them all the way up into a tie for 2nd, so it was an interesting and strong event for them the entire way. Those team members were Julian Habermann, Evan Nagareda, Sam Strang, Patrick Dennis, William Seitz and Evan Rork.
In the Junior High Section, the Shannan home-schoolers team of Nicholas Tomlin, Henrik Hahamyan, Reed Boeger, Joshua Petrin and Jacqueline Hahamyan took 4th place overall. NCC Member's Alexander Qin and Jind Dai led their Brentwood team to a tie for 4th place with 2.5 points out of 4.0. A very respectable result, seeing how it has been many years since a strong, Brentwood team was even competing. USN took home 7th, along with Battle Ground Academy in the Junior High Section.
In the high school, the lone NCC-sponsored team of Hume-Fogg Academic High School finished 3rd place. They made a run at the title after a slow start, but could only draw the final round match against White Station, when a win was needed to advance to a state championship playoff. Montgomery Bell Academy put in a good showing with NCC members Sal Neglia and Alvin Zhang helping them along to the state championship. MBA is another program rich in chess history that has not been active as of late, so it is good to see a well-organized team in place there again.
Congratulation to all our NCC teams and hopefully we can bring some titles back to Nashville next season!
